Professional experience
Dr. Robert Bina, MD, is a board-certified neurosurgeon specializing in complex and minimally invasive spine surgery, neuro-oncology, and cerebrovascular disorders. Growing up in a military family, he attended high school in Macon, Georgia, before earning his undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania. A year later, he moved to Arizona, where he became more involved in the medical community, completing a graduate degree in molecular biology at Northern Arizona University while working in Phoenix.
Dr. Bina pursued his medical education as a non-traditional student, enrolling at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix in 2009. During medical school, he discovered his passion for neurosurgery—a field that combined his interests in neuroscience and surgical precision. He was drawn to the specialty’s technical demands and the profound responsibility of guiding patients through some of the most challenging and life-altering health conditions.
After earning his medical degree in 2013, Dr. Bina matched into the neurosurgery training program at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson. He completed his residency in 2020, followed by fellowship training at Swedish Medical Center in Seattle and the University of Louisville in Kentucky.
Currently, Dr. Bina practices as a neurosurgeon at Banner – University Medical Center Phoenix and serves as an Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix. As an educator, he applies both repetition and the Socratic method to engage students in active learning, helping them expand their medical knowledge and surgical skills. He is also involved in training research residents and mentoring the next generation of neurosurgeons.
Dr. Bina remains deeply committed to his patients, continuously refining his expertise to provide cutting-edge neurosurgical care. He finds inspiration in the impact he makes on patients' lives, as well as the lifelong journey of learning that defines his profession. He still recalls the words of retired faculty member Dr. Elaine Niggemann at his White Coat Ceremony: “It takes 10 years to get 10 years of experience.” Reflecting on this, he emphasizes, “There is no teacher like experience. You don’t know how to navigate a situation until you’ve actually encountered it.”
